New Orleans Oil Spill Response
On Wednesday, July 23rd, an oil containing barge was struck by another cargo vessel on the Mississippi River in New Orleans, LA. The accident split the oil-containing barge in half, releasing an estimated 400,000 plus gallons of #6 fuel oil into the river.
MER management personnel were on-scene to assess the situation the day of the release. On Friday, July 25th, Moran Environmental Recovery (MER) was authorized to dispatch resources to assist in the clean-up effort. Resources include personnel, various types of work boats, oil skimmers, pressure washers, and absorbent materials. All were dispatched in a collective effort from each of MER's nine (9) East Coast resource centers. Crews arrived in New Orleans late Saturday July 26th, and were prepared for work at 0600 Sunday morning, less than 48 hours after the initial authorization to dispatch resources.
