MER Charleston responds to 9000 gallon fuel release at 526 and Virginia Avenue in North Charleston
On Sunday, November 2nd, a tanker carrying 9,000 gallons of fuel was involved in an accident and subsequent roll-over at the Virginia Avenue exit of 526 in North Charleston. The tanker subsequently releases it's 9,000 gallons of fuel to the highway, and a nearby creek, which leads to the Cooper River.
MER is currently working with local contractors, the DHEC, and local police and fire departments to contain and clean the release. MER's Boat Operations team placed boom in the water, and works to maintain that boom. Our field crews are placing down and bagging up contaminated absorbent materials, to remove the fuel from the surface of the water.
