MER crews assist the USCG in cleanup of a 2,000 gallon fuel oil spill on the Savannah River

The MEMT (Moran Emergency Management Team) was mobilized on Saturday October 1st to assist the United States Coast Guard in the cleanup of an oil spill on the Savannah River. The Coast Guard reported that approximately 2,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil had spilled onto the deck of the Ever Diadem and into the Savannah River during fueling operations on Saturday October 1st. As a Savannah OSRO (Oil Spill Removal Organization), and holder of the SSRC (Savannah Spill Response Corporation) contract, MER worked with the Coast Guard and area first responders to deploy 6,000 feet of boom, to contain the spread of the fuel. MER's Savannah Resource Center deployed initial assets, with support assets coming from MER Jacksonville and Charleston, in addition to MER subsidiary Jacksonville Pollution Control (JPC). MER personnel have been actively involved in clean up operations involving vessel decon, pier decon, skimming operations, and boom maintenance.
