Calculate Your Carbon Footprint

Monday, October 18, 2021  by qrelihan

What is a carbon footprint and why does it matter?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases that an individual generates from their activities & lifestyle.  Greenhouse gases, trap heat in the atmosphere and raise the average temperature of Earth, which leads to an increase in extreme weather patterns, sea level rise and droughts.  Therefore, daily activities such as how you get to and from work to lifestyle choices such as how many people you live with, generates various amounts of greenhouse gases. By making small changes to your daily life, you can dramatically reduce the amount of greenhouse gases you produce, which will in turn also decrease your carbon footprint.

Now, you may be wondering why calculating your carbon footprint matters and why you should aim to reduce it.  Well, your carbon footprint is your contribution to climate change, and it is up to you whether you want it to be positive or negative.  If everyone took it upon themselves to do little things such as taking public transportation or turning off the lights every time, they leave a room then the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere each year would be dramatically reduced. Even though it may not seem like one person can have that big of a difference, just think about what would happen if everyone thought like that? If no one changes their habits and continues to consume and produce more greenhouse gases than the consequences of climate change will only get worse. Whereas if everyone were to change just one habit it would slow the pace of climate change, allowing for time to adapt to the changes. Not to mention many of these changes will save individuals money by reducing their electricity bills or lead healthier lifestyles by making dietary changes, such as eating less meat.

To learn more about what you specifically can do to reduce your carbon footprint, I encourage you to follow the link below and take the carbon footprint quiz.  It only takes 2 minutes to calculate your carbon footprint and learn ways to reduce it.

Join Wednesday's Clean-Up!

Monday, September 27, 2021  by qrelihan

This Wednesday the Randolph office will be participating in World Clean-Up Day by picking up trash along a nearby river.  We encourage all Randolph employees who will be in the office on Wednesday to participate in the clean-up.  The river clean-up will be on Wednesday from 11:30am to 12:30pm, followed by an office lunch.  If you plan on joining the clean-up and lunch, be sure to email qrelihan@moranenvironmental.com so we can get an accurate head count for the lunch.

If you cannot make it to the clean-up on Wednesday, you can still participate in the World Clean-Up Day initiative by picking up litter in your neighborhood with your friends & family.  Be sure to send pictures of the garbage you pick up along with your completed MER Scavenger Hunt cards to stewardship@moranenvironmental.com to receive a prize.  Thank you to those who have already gone out in your communities to clean up litter, not only have you supported the company's sustainability initiative, but you have also done your part in keeping the environment clean & beautiful.

MER Trash Scavenger Hunt 2021

Monday, September 13, 2021  by qrelihan

World Clean-Up Day is this Saturday, September 18th, 2021. Employees are encouraged to participate in the MER Trash Scavenger Hunt or clean-up their communities on their own.   Keep in mind the number given for each trash item on the game cards is not set in stone and the goal is to have fun while cleaning-up your communities.

The MER Trash Scavenger Hunt will work like this:

  1. Print a game card (you can also take photos of the items or write the list of items on a piece of paper)
  2. Get your friends and family to pick up the trash items with you
  3. Submit a completed game card or photo of the trash with your name, MER company you work for and location to stewardship@moranenvironmental.com

By submitting a completed game card or photo of the trash you collected, not only will you get a MER GREEN gift box, but you will also contribute to a prize that will be given to the office with the most participants. The game cards are linked to this page and can be downloaded for use.

Coming Up: World Clean-Up Day

Tuesday, August 24, 2021  by qrelihan

Every third Saturday in September is World Clean-Up Day and just like Earth Day it is a worldwide event dedicated to making the environment a clean and beautiful place. To give you an idea of how big this volunteering event is, it attracts 2 million US and 21 million volunteers across the globe.

The official date of World Clean-Up Day is September 18th; however, it is encouraged to participate in clean-up activities throughout the entire month of September! World Clean-Up Day is our way of showing local communities that we care about the environment and are committed to keeping it clean. In fact, observing World Clean-Up Day is as simple as going out in your community and picking up trash.

Like how Earth Day events were run this year, World Clean-Up Day can be done on your own or you can participate in a virtual challenge with the company.  So, get your friends and family together to help clean up your communities!

Over the next few days, we will announce the virtual challenge/activity that we will be holding for World Clean-Up Day and there may be prizes involved, so stay tuned!

To learn more about World Clean-Up Day or who participates, use the link below to check out the official website: National Cleanup Day - Saturday, September 18, 2021
